Advantage of NVMe technology
NVMe: Non-Volatile Memory Express, this technology exists since 2011 to improve the limitations of SATA interface and communication protocols. NVMe drives use the PCIe (Peripheral Component Interconnect Express) interface which allows a much faster communication speed.
Comparison of the two technologies:
NVMe: 64,000 MB/s data rate
SATA SSD: 600MB/s data rate
NVMe: 65,535 command queues
SATA SSD: 1 command queue
NVMe: 65,536 commands per queue
SATA SSD: 32 commands per queue
Without going into details, the figures are quite eloquent!
NVMe technology is on its way to becoming the new industry standard for data storage.
For the drives themselves, depending on the number of lanes available on the PCIe interface, the data transfer speed will vary from 1 GB/s to 16 GB/s and for the next generation, transfer speeds can even reach 32 GB/s. A definite improvement in performance as the SATA interface is limited to 0.6 GB/s.
